TFN(Tax File Number) 신청

호주에 입국을 하게 되면 TFN을 신청해서 받아야 한다. TFN은 http://www.ato.gov.au 홈페이지에서 신청할 수 있다. 호주 밖에서는 신청할 수 없으므로 꼭 호주에 입국하자마자 신청하는 것이 좋다.  이 TFN 번호가 있어야 센터링크에 각종 보조금도 신청할 수 있기 때문이다. 

 

TFN신청을 완료하면 아래와 같이 신청이 완료되었다는 메시지를 보여준다. 28일내로 등록한 주소지로 보내준다는 내용이다.

It is not compulsory to quote your tax file number to anyone. However, if you do not supply your tax file number to your payer within 28 days of commencing a new job, your payer must withhold 46.5% if you are a resident and 45% if you are a non-resident from any payments made to you after this period. 

A letter advising you of your TFN will be sent to the postal address you have provided.

TFN을 홈페이지에 신청하고 일주일 정도 지나니 ATO로 부터 아래와 같은 편지가 왔다. TFN은 9자리 숫자로 된 번호였다. 은행계좌를 개설할 때 이 TFN을 알려 주지 않았다면 꼭 알려 줘야 이자 소득에 대한 세금처리를 제대로 할 수 있다. 이 TFN은 회사에서 월급을 받을 때나 대출을 받을 때에 늘 필요로 하게 되는 중요한 번호이다.
